Campaigner to mount legal challenge over Cardiff airport road
30.01.06
Enviromental campaigner Max Wallis, a member of Barry and District Friends of the Earth, will mount a High Court challenge to a council's proposed unitary development plan today. Mr Wallis argues that Vale of Glamorgan Council's decision to include a route to Cardiff Airport that is no longer favoured by the Assembly Government is blighting hundreds of homes.
The route, which would involve building a new road near the village of Wenvoe, has been superseded by another proposal further west. The council's head of planning and transportation, Rob Thomas, said, 'The Unitary Development Plan has been through a number of statutory stages in full accordance with regulations, and the process has allowed all interested parties, including Friends of the Earth, the opportunity to comment.'
'The council has carefully considered all representations received at every stage of the process, and in addition an independent inspector has considered a vast number of representations. Finally, a number of issues, including that of the policy relating to the provision of an Airport Access Road was considered by the Welsh Assembly Government at both official and ministerial level in advance of the adoption of the plan by the council.'
'The Assembly advised those making representations, including FoE, that they had no reason to intervene in the adoption of the plan. The council is disappointed with the decision of an individual to legally challenge the adoption of the UDP, and will rigorously defend its position.'
