Emergency after RAF jet bird strike
29.09.10
Six fire engines were scrambled to Cardiff Airport yesterday to escort an RAF Hawk jet to safety when it got into difficulty after flying into a flock of birds. The jet landed safely at 10:25 and was escorted to a secure area at the airport by the vehicles.
A Cardiff Airport spokeswoman said the RAF Hawk landed because of a bird strike. The aircraft was checked and had not sustained any damage in the incident. It has since departed the airport.
A spokesman for RAF Valley at Anglesey confirmed the jet involved was from the base and was flying in the Pembrey area of Carmarthenshire when it was hit by a bird. The pilot had followed normal procedure in flying to the nearest airport.
