Servisair to pull out from Cardiff
25.04.09
Servisair is pulling out of Cardiff Airport after nearly 40 years. The ground handler said fewer flights meant its operation at the airport was no longer viable and its operations will stop at the end of May. The decision was blamed on the collapse of Zoom last year, and general reductions in scheduled and charter flights since then.
The company has 21 full-time staff and another 23 part-timers at the airport. It provides a variety of services, including baggage handling and check-in staff. Workers jobs will probably be protected by employment law, as the business is transferred to a new company.
Servisair has been operating at Cardiff Airport since 1972 but most flights there are now handled by rival, Aviance. A spokesman said: ‘With two ground handlers currently vying for business in a very limited market, Servisair has reluctantly reached the view that their business is no longer financially viable.'
Cardiff Airport's operations director, Russell Clements, said: ‘We understand why Servisair has reached this difficult decision given the current economic climate. We anticipate no loss of service to our airlines and will work with all parties to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible.’
