Cardiff Airport is expecting 5% more passengers this Christmas than last year - a new festive record - as thousands of passengers swap Wales for sunnier climes in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. The airport is even running flights to the Mediterranean on Christmas Day.
Peter Phillips, head of marketing at Cardiff Airport, said: 'We are expecting to be up 5% this Christmas, but a lot of people leave it until late to book. Most of the travelling up to Christmas will be people returning home in both directions - the popular flights tend to be those to and from Scotland, Ireland and other parts of the UK.'
December 20 is set to be the most popular departure date, according to lastminute.com, with up to 11% more Britons spending Christmas and New Year abroad this year than last. The huge boom in budget airlines and low-cost flights plus the weak dollar are said to be fuelling the winter getaways.
