A new link road to Cardiff Airport could cost £135m, walesonline reports. The figure was revealed in a letter from Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones to Conservative AM Andrew Davies.
A decision on the preferred route for the relief road could be made by the Welsh Assembly Government by the end of the year. Public consultation on 3 options has just ended, but it is only now that the estimated costs of the project have been revealed.
The 3 options are:
A: from the M4 at Junction 33 via the A4050 and including safety improvements to Five Mile Lane, which would cost between £125m - £135m;
B: from the M4 at Junction 33 via the A48 and Five Mile Lane and including a western bypass off Culverhouse Cross, which would cost between £110m - £135m; and
C: from the M4 at Junction 34 via Five Mile Lane and including a western bypass of Culverhouse Cross, which would cost between £80m - £110m.
Steve Hodgetts, director of commercial development at Cardiff Airport told the newspaper that it was in favour of the third option because it provided the best all-round solution for the airport. He said the third option kept airport traffic away from the congested Culverhouse Cross and fitted in with the airport’s hopes for providing National Express and high-speed rail links via a proposed Miskin Parkway station.
