A passenger searched by police before boarding a holiday flight and found to be in possession of counterfeit bank notes and drugs was given a 6 month suspended jail sentence yesterday.
Stephen Rowe, 34, of Trefechan, Merthyr Tydfil, was heading for a flight to Alicante, Spain, when he was stopped going through departures at Cardiff Airport. Cardiff Crown Court heard officers found 8 counterfeit 50 euro notes and 20 'reefer style cigarettes' containing cannabis resin in his luggage.
Mr. Rowe was taken into custody and his house was searched, where police found a further 3 counterfeit notes, cannabis bushes and a bag containing 36.6g of amphetamine inside the battery compartment of a child's mechanical toy.
He pleaded guilty to attempting to export counterfeit banknotes and attempting to export cannabis resin. He also admitted possessing cannabis, amphetamine and further counterfeit banknotes at his home.
Judge Christopher Vosper QC sentenced Mr. Rowe to a total of 6 months in prison, suspended for 12 months, with a requirement that he complete a substance abuse prevention programme.
