Minister defends Cardiff airport - Brussels flights decision
14.12.05
The Wesh Assembly Government has defended a decision to invest in daily flights from Cardiff airport to Brussels, just 20 months after a similar route was scrapped because of a lack of demand. The flights have been reintroduced thanks to a £4 million aid package for Welsh airports, announced today by Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies.
Airports will apply to the route development fund to start flights to new destinations. The press have speculated that fund could result in passengers soon being offered daily transatlantic flights from Cardiff Airport. Airport bosses are said to be discussing the possibility of new routes to North America and the Middle East with airlines.
Mr Davies said 'It (the fund) is to encourage the development of flights from Cardiff to major destinations in Europe such as Brussels, but it could be anywhere in Europe or indeed overseas to North America or the Middle East.' The fund could also be used to encourage more tourists to come to Wales, he added.
