A drunken rugby fan was arrested at Cardiff Airport yesterday after abusing staff while trying to board a flight to Edinburgh. The arrest came after the runway was closed for two hours, delaying many flights.
Police were called after boarding gate staff complained about a 63-year-old man booked on a Monarch Airlines charter flight to Edinburgh, shortly before 13:00 yesterday. The man, who celebrates his 64th birthday today, was stopped from boarding the supporters' plane and arrested by South Wales Police.
A Monarch Airlines spokesman said: 'A passenger who was booked to travel on a rugby charter flight between Cardiff and Edinburgh was refused travel. The passenger, who was believed to be intoxicated, became abusive to staff at the boarding gate and was not permitted to board the aircraft. Police were subsequently called and the passenger was arrested.'
The Monarch plane was one of many leaving Cardiff Airport for Edinburgh which were delayed due to the snow and icy weather yesterday. The runway was closed for two hours between 11:00 - 13:00 as thousands of Wales fans flocked to the Scottish capital for the Six Nations match with Scotland today.
