The number of people flying from Cardiff Airport to France fell by two thirds in 2 years, according to official statistics. This saw France drop out of the top 10 international destinations from the airport – and below Portugal, Turkey, Cyprus, the Czech Republic and even the USA.
Spain continued to dominate the airport’s international destinations by passengers, the Welsh Assembly Government’s 2007 digest of air transport statistics released yesterday has revealed. But the figures have led to warnings that a lack of routes between Wales and Germany is hampering business links. Not a single passenger travelled between Cardiff airport and Germany in 2006, the latest year in the figures.
In 2006, Cardiff Airport handled 1.6 million international passengers. Half travelled to or from Spain or the Canary Islands. Charter flights to Spain declined but were replaced by scheduled flights – reflecting the popularity of booking flights and accommodation serrate over the internet.
The statistics also show a correlation between international flights from Cardiff and areas popular for holidays or second homes, with Bulgaria going from no passengers in 2000 to 24,731 in 2006.
